Hobbies
Children at Engel day-care centres can participate in hobby activities as part of the day-care centre’s weekly programme. The available hobby activities are children’s music classes organised by the Central Helsinki Music Institute and dance lessons held by Helsinki Dance Institute. Hobby groups are held in Finnish at Engel Huvila, Seppä and Viiskulma. Hobbies are held in Finnish and in English at the bilingual Engel Albert day-care centre.
Hobbies at the day-care centre make daily life fun for the child
Both the children’s music lessons and dance lessons are included in the day-care centre’s weekly programme so that it is possible to take part as a natural part of daily life at the day-care centre. Hobbies bring the child joy and provide interesting things to do. In the best-case scenario, a hobby that begins in day-care will spark an interest that will turn into a life-long hobby for the child.
Sign-ups for hobbies are binding for each school year, and the groups will go ahead if there are enough children participating. The institutes that organise the activities are responsible for their practical implementation and will invoice the families separately. Participation in hobbies is completely voluntary. Children who do not participate in hobby activities will follow Engel’s normal daily routine.
Children’s music lessons open the door to the world of music
At our day-care centre’s music lessons, an instructor from the Central Helsinki Music Institute comes to the centre to hold lessons during the school day. The children’s music lessons follow the music institute’s early childhood music education curriculum with consideration for the day-care centre’s wishes.
The children’s music lessons are a good foundation for later instrument lessons, and children that attend the lessons can continue at the music institute either learning to play an instrument or in the expression choir. The primary aim is not to produce children that can play musical instruments, but instead to open the door to the world of music for everyone involved.
The music institute also offers staff training, where possible. The music institute instructor guides the day-care centre staff in how to use songs and materials to get the most out of them in the day-care centre’s activities throughout the year.
Children who participate in the children’s music lessons are pupils of the Central Helsinki Music Institute and therefore are welcome at all of the institute’s events, for example, the annual concerts held for the children who attend the music lessons. There are 32 lessons a year and the fee for the term is paid directly to the music institute.
Dance lessons increase positive energy
Our day-care centre’s dance lessons are organised in collaboration with the Helsinki Dance Institute. The dance lessons are energetic, creative, and positive. The teaching is target-oriented and progresses each year, and it lowers the threshold to continue with dance later on. Older children’s groups also learn dance techniques in an age-appropriate way.
The options are dance play for 2-4-year-olds and dance mix/creative dance for 5-6- year-olds. There are 32 lessons per year, and the term fee is paid to the dance institute. More information and descriptions of the dance lessons can be found on the website www.helsingintanssiopisto.fi.
